The only way to learn a language is by using it in a meaningful context.
The classroom is set up and directed to facilitate the meaningful use of French. I expect that students experiment with and use French to the best of their abilities everyday. I balance playing with (and in) in language with thoughtful analysis of its structure and pronunciation to help students gain confidence and ability to communicate successfully in French.
Assessments:
Oral and conversational ability will be assessed while or after playing interactive games that cause the students to use the language. Vocabulary, spelling, pronunciation and word gender memorization will be assessed by quizzes, projects and tests that focuses on the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Grading categories and weights:
Role play/ singing/ participation 15%
Oral and written quizzes 35%
Oral and written projects 35%
Homework 15%
Please note: Many quizzes and projects will be reported in powergrade and on the wiki as multiple grades. This is done in order to provide more detailed feedback on the students’ performance. For example I will distinguish between vocabulary recognition, spelling, listening and grammatical concepts. The intent is to allow the students to recognize what they do well and what specific skills they need to improve.
